The Bud Carlson Alternative School is a drop out prevention program aimed at increasing the potential of Spaulding High School students in grades 9-12. The fundamental goals are to help students become more successful academically and socially. The mission of the Bud Carlson Alternative School is to assist students who are at risk of dropping out to develop a positive self-image, increase social and academic skills and be motivated to succeed in Spaulding High School and in society. The Bud Carlson Alternative School has served Rochester and its youth for more than twenty years. Admission to the program is achieved through an interview and selection process. Students are usually referred to the school by guidance counselors, administrative staff or teachers based upon issues of chronic truancy, academic failure and disciplinary actions. The school is currently providing programming for 60 Spaulding High School students. The Bud Carlson Alternative School offers a wide variety of educational experiences. All core academic courses are offered at the school. Students are taught in a relaxed atmosphere, which is more conducive to individual student learning styles. Program goals and objectives are clearly stated allowing students the ability to meet the schools expectations. Once accepted to the program students are placed on a four-year academic plan. This plan ensures that all students meet Spaulding High School graduation requirements. Alternative School students are required to attend Spaulding High School for a portion of the school day. Most students use this as an opportunity to fulfill elective credits by taking courses at the Technology Center.
