Parent Involvement
Parent involvement is a critical ingredient to children’s success in school. Since there are many styles of family life, there are many different ways for parents to support their child’s academic career.
Ways
parents support their children include:
- Celebrating their child’s successes
- Taking their child to the library
- Having conversations about the importance of education
- Sharing critical information with your child’s teacher - teacher’s can be more understanding when they know why a child is sullen or acting out
- Providing a consistent routine for bedtimes and mornings
- Providing a time and place for homework
- Reading to their child 20 minutes a day
- Helping their child to understand and follow school rules
- Joining the PTA or PTO
- Volunteer activities - whether from home or at the school
Parent Volunteers
Rochester Schools welcome and encourage parents to volunteer in the schools. There are many ways to get involved from one time activities to regular, on-going volunteer opportunities.
What
do parents gain form volunteering?
- Develop a connection with school staff. Establishing positive relationships with school personnel can be helpful when you need to discuss your own child’s needs.
- An understanding of how your child’s school works. You will get to see first hand the variety of skills today’s teachers must have and the various challenges they must know how to manage.
- Be a more informed voter. Parents can make more informed choices when they understand what schools need.
- Learn a new skill or strengthen current skills. The skills you use during your volunteer service are frequently helpful in other areas of life such as at work, with family and other civic engagement.
