DINI Strategy #1:
Ensure rigorous and relevant mathematics programs are in place to engage all students.

  • Tier instruction for mathematics
  • RMS - after school tutoring in school
  • Math club - mornings - open to all
  • RMS - tier math programs available to all students
  • Nancy Loud Schoolstaff is doing a math PEG this year
  • PLC focused on math
  • Dedicated set-aside time for special education & regular education to monitor student progress - using NWEA, EDM assessments, math boxes, classroom work, etc.
  • Math tutoring in grades 4-5 (also being done by teachers)
  • Tier 2 math in grade 2
  • Math honors society tutoring
  • RMS - grades 6-8 all have created “essential outcomes” & “common assessment” by grades
  • RMS - summer tutoring in math
  • SHS - doing away with low level Fundamental Math course and increasing the number of students in higher level math classes
  • Encouraged and supported paraprofessional training in math interventions
  • RMS - implementation of Everyday Mathematics at grade 6
  • Intervention math programs used with K-8 students - do number worlds & “Do the Math
  • Everyday math used with K-6 students - MathScape with grades 7 & 8

DINI Strategy #2:
Ensure opportunities for students to engage in non-fiction writing across the curriculum.

  • Writing in the new K-5 science kits
  • Writing in science
  • Frequent discussion (teachers’ lunch meetings) re: open response across curricula
  • The high school is developing competencies for each course with a focus on literature and writing
  • Monitoring open response in math
  • Teachers are writing more in each subject area
  • Open end questions in science, social studies, and math
  • Developing writing curriculum for district
  • 6 + 1 Traits of Writing
  • Using multiple opportunities in S.F., EDM and Science to engage in writing activities. Some reading interventions also provide opportunities.
  • Grade level discussion about the emphasis on writing in “every class, every day”
  • Introduction of this new idea to staff in February 2008

Development and implementation of collaborative structures with a focus on student learning.

  • Special education and reading specialists meet together
  • Advisory group
  • Data entry meetings

  • At SHS we are attempting to get rid of teacher duties creating time for PLCs
  • RMS - Val, Art, & Chris meet with Sally & Susan monthly to work collaboratively, especially with data

  • RMS - Supt. Hopkins is training RMS admin. team to look and plan using student data (NECAP & NWEA
