Guidance for Donated Computer Hardware and Software

The Rochester School Distinct routinely receives personal computers of varying levels as donations for classroom or other use. Depending on the level of computer offered such units may be a valued addition to our network, or may lack sufficient resources to run programs currently in use for either administrative or instructional purposes.

The following recommendations are intended to provide guidelines for schools when dealing with potential donors to insure the best use of time and resources, as well as insuring that donated computers will be usable for administrative and/or instructional purposes.

1. The minimum level of acceptance for donated computers is a Pentium IV, 1GHz processor, PC based unit. Lower levels cannot be utilized with the software and network applications now in use.

2. The School Districts policy is to phase out the use of MAC systems. The district will not be accepting donations of MAC based systems.

3. Only Laser Jet printers are desirable donations.

4. Critical....all equipment must be in good working order.

5. Monitors should be SVGA type and support real 16-bit or greater color depth.

6. All hardware should be supported by Windows 2000 or XP Pro based software.

7. The district will also consider accepting computer components on a case-by-case basis.

No donated equipment should be delivered to any school without prior approval. Donations that meet or exceed the above criteria must be approved by the District's Computer Information Center with a Donations Form (CIC Form 4) . Donations that do not meet these criteria cannot be placed on the network.
Every case will be reviewed on an individual basis.

How to check to see if the computer you want to donate meets the above requirements.
