Each set of encyclopedias has one volume (usually the last one) that is titled Research Guide or Index. This index will guide you to the exact volume and page number that your topic is located on. This is particularly helpful when you can't find your topic listed in alphabetical order in the volume marked with the letter that your topic begins with. For example, a particular battle may not be located in Volume B under battle,  but may be found listed under the war in which it occurred. If you look up the name of the battle in this index you will be able to find out what volume and page your information can be found on. Sometimes there are several volumes and pages listed that will guide you to information about a topic--be sure to follow all the leads so you can gather as many facts as possible!
