What are the basic facts?

  • In January 2025 the RSD School Board voted to accept a redistricting plan changing school boundaries across Rochester with three goals in mind:

  • Balancing school capacities

  • Minimizing disruption

  • Ensuring equitable access for all students;

  • The new redistricting boundaries do not take effect until the 2025-26 school year;

  • Two elementary schools will be closing, School Street and William Allen.

How do I know which school my student will be attending?

During the first and second weeks of March, letters were sent out to every parent/guardian of a currently enrolled elementary student indicating their 2025-26 school assignment;

Letters were sent to the address you currently have on file with the school district;

School assignments are done by address so if you have more than one elementary student, you should have received additional letters, but not to worry every elementary student at your address will attend the same school;

Only incoming kindergartners that were already fully registered by the end of February would have received a letter.

Bus routes and stops will not be finalized until August - watch your email and this website for more information

What is the district doing to help my student with the school transition?

Whether your student is changing schools or not, transitions can be challenging - new friends, new staff and possibly a new school. The district is coordinating with all schools to offer a number of activities and resources to support families and students. These include:

  • Step Up Days where transitioning students will visit their new school or welcome new friends into their existing school;

  • Summer open houses;

  • School closing and opening ceremonies;

  • Invitations to current school activities;

  • Handouts/support sessions and videos about helping you students transition without anxiety;

  • Transition kits for every student with school focused materials and activities;

  • Customized transition activities for students with particular challenges for students with particular challenges.
